Gary D. Christian
Inducted in 2007 for his international leadership in electroanalytical chemistry, atomic spectroscopy, and flow methods of analysis, and for his pioneering contributions to chemical education.
Dr. Gary D. Christian's lifelong dedication to the field of chemistry has resulted in significant contributions in several areas including electroanalytical chemistry, atomic spectroscopy, flow methods of analysis and enhanced chemical education. He has achieved this through advanced work with the Center for Process Analytical Chemistry and by serving on the boards of over nine institutions including the Instrumentation Advisory Panel and the Analytical Chemistry board. Dr. Christian currently serves on the boards of the Analytical Sciences Digital Library, Canadian Journal of Spectroscopy, CRC Critical Reviews in Analytical Chemistry, Electroanalysis, Jordanian Journal of Chemistry, Journal of Flow Injection Analysis, Journal of the Saudi Chemical Society, Sensors, and the International Journal of Electrochemical Science. In addition he is the author of more than three hundred papers and several books on instrumental analysis and atomic absorption spectrometry. Dr. Christian is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Talanta, and has been since 1989.
Dr. Christian received his B.S. degree from the University of Oregon and PhD in Chemistry ('64) from the University of Maryland. He was a research analytical chemist at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and then spent some time as a Professor at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Christian then joined the University of Washington as a Professor of Chemistry and currently is Professor Emeritus. During his time at the university, he also became a Fulbright Scholar at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, an Invited Professor at the University of Geneva, and the Divisional Dean of Sciences at the University of Washington.
In 1988 he received the American Chemical Society Fisher Award in Analytical Chemistry. In addition to this achievement he was also awarded the Université Libre de Bruxelles Medal of Honor, the Talanta Gold Medal, the Charles University Commemorative Medal, the inaugural Deakin University Geoff Wilson Medal, the Japanese Association for Flow Injection Analysis Scientific Honor Award Medal, the Senior Scholar Award of the Thailand Research Fund and the University of Ghent Honorary Certificate of Research. In 2005 Dr. Christian received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Chiang Mai University followed by becoming an honorary member of the Japanese Society for Analytical Chemistry in 2006.
He is active in numerous chemistry committees such as the American Chemical Society, Society for Applied Spectroscopy, Spectroscopy Society of Canada, Society for Electroanalytical Chemistry, and the Thailand Chemical Society. Dr. Christian was Chairman of the Division of Analytical Chemistry of the American Chemical Society, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Soc
